The Great Screen behind the high altar in Winchester Cathedral dates from the fourteenth century, though all its figure sculpture was removed in the sixteenth century, and replaced in the nineteenth. The screen was carefully cleaned with soft paint brushes and minor areas of instability were repaired and stabilised.
The Great Screen in Winchester Cathedral was cleaned as part of the major project of conservation and re-presentation of the presbytery, which began in 2015 and was completed in 2018. Fifteenth century niches and canopies now hold nineteenth century figure sculpture inserted under George Gilbert-Scott.
