18 North Street, Exeter – 17th century panelling with two early painted schemes. Funded by Exeter City Council
The panelling was removed to storage by the museum in 1996, after the building was damaged by fire. It was uncovered and reinstated in its original position in 18 North Street, now a restaurant. A number of different specialists were involved in the project to ensure that this important piece of Exeter’s heritage could once again be put back in public view.
Painted timber is found in a variety of situations - from large cathedral ceilings to domestic screens. We have worked on numerous schemes, some executed in oil, others in size-based medium. Projects often involve collaboration with timber conservators and dendrochronologists as well as art historians and archaeologists.
